Here is a current topic in news.

In 1984 the National Organ Transplant Act established a system that would allow for a a fair a trustworthy source for organ donations. Within the guidelines of NOTA, HIV/AID infected organs were not to be accepted. While this was not done out of prejudice, it was done to prevent further spreading of HIV/AID.

Today, a new push has been made to allow HIV/AID infected organs to be used for patients who have the acquired immune deficiency syndrome.
In order for that to happen there would need to be a change made to NOTA.

Those supporting the change claim that it will cut the list of patients on the wait-list in half.
Others are hesitant to move too quickly. Not wanting to allow for the risk of mixing organ donations.

IUPUIstudents recognize Jags in the Streets as a resource that provides serviceopportunities on or around campus. For those organizing the monthly service events being a part of theServiceCorps program gives them another reason to delve into social issues.

JessicaRodenbeck decided to educate herself and her peers within the ServiceCorpsprogram on a social issue that has recently been brought to her attention.

“I participated in IUPUI's World AIDS Day events and realized there was alot I did not know about the topic,” She said in an e-mail.

This pastFriday the ServiceCorps volunteered at the Damien Center, an organization whosemission is "to care for those affected and infected with HIV/AIDS."

Traci Johnson is an AmeriCorps volunteer and the VolunteerCoordinator at the Damien Center. Sheworked with Rodenbeck on coordinating the service event.

There was a library of “a bajillion books” that Johnsonneeded help moving from the basement to the main floor.

“They helped organize the books so we could move themupstairs,” she said.

What Johnson enjoys most about her job is seeing people speak out about HIV prevention. Jessica also wanted to be educated so that she could use her knowledge base to educate others.

“HIV/AIDS isconsidered a sexually transmitted disease, it is automatically assumed by manythat one contracts it through sexual contact, even though there are many otherways for contraction, including blood donation, etc.,” Rodenbeck said.

Children canalso be infected through their parents, making it a disease they contracted by no choice of their own.

Rodenbeck: “Throughouthistory there have been many children kept from school…just because they wereinfected with HIV. Now that the virus and disease is more understood, people affectedcan live very close to a normal lifestyle.”

These are types of things that most kids like to do. But that’s why Big Brother (and former IUPUI student) Jim Wisco and his Little Brother Jordan work so well together—Jim likes to do those things too. They can both do “normal” things that they both enjoy doing—but now they do them together.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Indiana (BBBSCI) currently has around 800 mentors in Central Indiana who make a huge difference every day, but the need is great. BBBSCI currently has about 40 Little Brothers and Littles Sisters around Central Indiana waiting for a mentor with over 400 in the application process.

Bigs are needed, especially Big Brothers and Big Couples. Through the program, volunteers are coached with the help of "Match Support Specialists" who are fully trained, full-time staff who give advice, help, activity suggestions and coupons to their matches. They also work with each match to emphasize:

-higher aspirations, greater confidence and better relationships

-educational success

-avoidance of risky behavior

According to an Harris Interactive study, 90% of former Littles stated their Big made them feel better about themselves, 81% said their Big changed their perspective on what they thought was possible in life and 46% now have a household income of $75,000 or more.

Jim has been matched with his Little Brother Jordan since 2006. Wisco said “Overall I just remember the first time I met him and he was a shy little kid. Now he's not little and he's not shy; he's become a great young man. He has become more confident and outgoing over the past couple years. I think that is due to several factors, not the least of which the great support he has from his family, but I hope I have helped some too.”

Bigs meet with their Little for roughly 4-6 hours a month, for a minimum of 12 months. Using a “design your own schedule” approach, Bigs are able to adjust their schedule and change their schedule as they go, meeting their Little in the evenings, over the weekends and even during lunch and partner schools. Wisco also stated, "Time management has been, and still is, a constant challenge. But, I've just tried to do the best I can. Even when I've had too much on my plate, it's been important to me to stick with him- he's a great young man.”

Nothing beats a smile on a child's face. And Wisco hopes more of the IUPUI staff/faculty and students get involved. Wisco said, “I'd definitely recommend BBBSCI to others. It's been a pleasure getting to know him and his family, and we've done so many fun things together that I've enjoyed just as much as him. I hope that I have made and can continue to make a positive impact on his life. And he has made a positive impact on my life as well-it's been a very rewarding experience, and one that I'll always remember.”

World AIDS Day

This Thursday on IUPUI campus an informative fair in the Campus Center will help raise awareness of the various people afflicted by HIV/AIDS. This global issue affects people from all backgrounds, beliefs, races and regions of the world. It is not limited to one crowd or one country.

The U.S. Center for Disease Control shares information on what populations are most significantly affected by HIV/AIDS in the United States and what can be done to prevent the spread of them.

U.S. National Overview

Nearly 1.2 million people are living with HIV in the U.S. (an estimated 1,178,350 adults and adolescents), and one in five of those (20 percent) are unaware of their infections.
Despite increases in the total number of people living with HIV in the U.S. in recent years, the annual number of new infections has remained relatively stable overall.
However, HIV infections continue at far too high a level, with approximately 50,000 Americans becoming newly infected with HIV each year.
More than 16,000 people with AIDS still die each year in the U.S.

Non-Profit Indy: Girls Inc.

This week we're taking a closer look at a non-profit in the Indianapolis area.

Girls Inc. of Greater Indianapolis provides hands-on programsthat address the challenges girls face today, like self-esteem and bullying. They want all girls to be healthy, educated and independent. Volunteers work withgirls who range from 6 years old to fourteen years old once a week for 6 weeksthroughout the school year.

Fall Alternative Break: Boone, North Carolina

What made the Fall Alternative Break trip worth while?

Maybe it was the beauty of the Autumn leaves on Rough Ridge Parkway, or perhaps the cool air of the Great Smoky Mountains, it may have even been the peanut butter and bologna sandwiches, but more than likely it was a combination of the entire experience that makes FAB Coordinators Jill Conley and Taylor Pennell look forward to planning future alternative break trips.

This year FAB spent the weekend of fall break in Boone, North Carolina. Rough Ridge Parkway is just a part of the Mountain-to-Sea trail on which the volunteers worked for three days. Armed with clippers and pruning shears they were commissioned to clear a small portion of the 1,000 mile trail that winds it's way from the mountains of North Carolina to the Outer Banks.
"Leading FAB taught us all the details about how to plan an Alternative Break, but it wascompletely worth it when we saw how well the group worked together to achievethe goals we had set from the beginning," Conely and Pennell said. "It gave us confidence to have asuccessful upcoming Spring Break."

"We were all quiet on the way there," Fernanda Agnes said about the nine hour trip through the hills of Kentucky and Tennesse. But she said it didn't take long for the team to warm up to each other as they heated water over the campfire for mochas.

When the team wasn't working on the trail, they were eating their meals in picturesque places or layering on clothes to protect themselves from the surprisingly chilly evening temperatures.

The menu of the weekend took a surprising twist when people decided to invent new food combinations. Everything from bologna and peanut butter sandwiches to banana s'mores were created. Apparently, they were good too.

Apart from fun food experiments, Conley and Pennell agreed that enjoying the mountain scenery was the most memorable.

"Thebest moment was when we worked hard on the last day, and when we finished wehiked up to the top of Rough Ridge and were blown away by a breath taking viewof the Autumn trees."

The group was glad to hear that their efforts could be a jump-start for the small town economies within the area, as tourists would begin to use the trail more often. Residents of the area were grateful, and the students were happy to be of service.

Conley and Pennell both are looking forward to the Spring Alternative Break trips, and they agree that it is a "great break from the busy life of a college student."

News Worthy: Creating a Community

Mark Spicer started smoking marijuana eight years ago when he was a sophomore at New Trier High School. By senior year, the dabbling had turned into a daily habit; at his small, liberal arts college, he added painkillers to the list. Despite multiple attempts at rehab, it took just a few weeks before he'd return to his hard-partying ways.

"About the only thing to do is go to frat parties, otherwise you don't have much of a social life … and alcohol and drugs are everywhere," said Spicer, 23, of Glencoe.

Now, the philosophy/environmental studies major is back in school, maintaining a 3.8 grade-point average and his sobriety. He's at Augsburg College in Minneapolis, a choice made not only for the academics but for its vibrant recovery community of 83 peers, all fighting the same battle.

Across the U.S., universities are paying closer attention to students like Spicer. Almost two dozen schools now have comprehensive recovery programs for those battling addictions.

"This is their choice … and a lot of students are here on their own dime," said the program's director, Patrice Salmeri. "They found out what it's like to sit in jail, to be homeless, to be cut off by their parents. Some say they shouldn't even be alive right now … but they come here and they're ready."

For Spicer, it's hard to believe he's the same student who spiraled downward, stealing from his roommates for Vicodin, Xanax and Oxycontin, which he called "my first true love." He left Whitman College in Walla Walla, Wash., found Augsburg, got kicked out of StepUP, but remained in Minneapolis.

"One day, I just woke up and I was really sick with a sinus infection, from snorting all these pills … and I just had enough," Spicer said. "I went back to my friends at StepUP … and I credit these three guys with saving my life."

After six months of abstinence — a program requirement — Spicer re-enrolled. Now he's a resident assistant, on track to graduate in June. But his proudest accomplishment is 21 months of sobriety, which he calls "a gift."

Augsburg is also where everything clicked for Emily, a graduate of Oak Park-River Forest High School, who lasted only three semesters at Loyola University. Now a junior, she also attributes her achievement to a caring staff and forging strong bonds with those who share a similar history.

"We all go together to clubs, to concerts, dancing … we just don't drink. When I was in Chicago, I'd be the only one not drinking and I felt weird," she said.

"A few years ago, if anyone told me that I'd be going to college and getting good grades, I'd never believe them," said the psychology major, who asked that her last name not be used.

The same goes for Ezra Kaplan, who started drinking at Glenbrook North High School. After graduating in 2006, he attended Kalamazoo College, dropping out midway through his sophomore year.

"The life I was living wasn't conducive to academics," said Kaplan, 23. "My parents knew I was lying to them, drinking and smoking a lot more pot than I was saying."

Kaplan moved back to Northbrook in 2008, went to wilderness therapy and eventually checked into treatment in Prescott, Ariz. After discharge, he stayed in the small, central Arizona town, a hub for recovering addicts with more than 200 Alcoholics Anonymous/Narcotics Anonymous meetings a week.

Kaplan exited rehab and moved into transitional housing, where his roommates were part of Treehouse Learning Community, a private program that requires all students to be pursuing a degree. He now works for Treehouse while at Prescott College, where he is studying to be a chemistry teacher.

"At the end of the day, I came home to a sober environment instead of a drinking one," he said. "And I could see how it made all the difference."

Freshman Service Scholars 2011

In the Sam Jones Program incoming freshman, known as Freshman Service Scholars (FSS), volunteer 2 hours a week at George Washington Community High School. It's an Indianapolis school just west of campus on Washington street.

The FSS are tutors and a mentors to these kids as they help them with homework and interact with the students in activities and games. There have been many things the FSS have enjoyed about the experience, but there are also some challenges to overcome.

I was sitting in my office chair when the brilliant idea hit me.

I should let you know what social issues - large or small - you could be aware of this month. When I did a google search I was hit with an overwhelming number of things we are supposed to be aware of in the month of October.

I can't even begin to list all the causes for the month of October - there's way too many - but I've listed some that made me laugh and caught my interest.

Tim Streett

Tim Streett is a man with a vision. His vision, though, is not a quick fix plan that will putter out in a few years. It's going to require a dedication not only to reaching out to the poor.

It's going to require people to enter the community to learn about these people and build relationships - lasting relationships. It will take giving up preconceived ideas and understanding the cultural reasons behind poverty-stricken people's actions.

Can this man come teach his six-week course, "Poverty 101," at IUPUI?

I think I would take it.

Perhaps rolling out of bed on a Friday morning wasn't the motivation for students in volunteering at IUPUI's Day of Caring. It was impressive to see that they were still willing to come, join in the action, and volunteer.

Growing NearWest Garden Project

The Growing NearWest project is a community garden project in the NearWest neighborhoods of Haughville, Hawthorne, Stringtown, and We Care which present a unique opportunity to foster community engagement, capitalize on existing assets, and build community capacity to address food access issues.

Growing NearWest needs volunteers who would like to help prep the gardens on Saturday, April 30th. During this time, we will prep each garden that will include, but not limited to tilling the ground, mapping, and creating the raised beds.

Helping Homeless Veterans and Families

Join IUPUI on November 12th in a partnership with HVAF of Indiana, Inc, a nonprofit organization dedicated to eliminating homelessness for veterans and their families through prevention, education, supportive services, and advocacy.

HVAF provides supportive, structured housing to Indiana veterans and their families who are recovering from homelessness. Additionally, it provides veterans and their families with the assistance necessary to ensure successful independent living in the community. As a volunteer, you will have the opportunity to help HVAF with raking leaves, picking up limbs and debris, removal of brush from trees and indoor painting.

Jags in the Street: Paint the Town

Paint the Town:

A simple idea: we are a group of people who like to paint houses and there are a bunch of our neighbors who need their houses painted.

Paint the Town or PTT is an enormously successful program from Cincinnati that is in it's inaugurual year here in Indianapolis. The idea is that painting houses on a particular block will help improve the appearance and serve as a great way to bring the neighborhood together.
We have identified homeowners that are in need of a fresh coat of paint and for a number of reasons have been unable to complete the project on their own. PTT will provide volunteers, supplies, and expertise to homeowners in order to repaint their home's exterior.

Come join IUPUI on Saturday, October 2, 2010 to help turn a house into a lovely home in the Bates-Hendricks Neighborhood in Indianapolis.

There are 2 shifts available: 8 am - 12pm and 1pm - 5 pm.

Spots are limited, so join us now in getting some paint on your clothes and revitalizing a part of your community!

What is FAB? IUPUI Fall Alternative Break (FAB) is a low-cost service trip that takes IUPUI students to communities outside of Indianapolis, where they take part in volunteering and hands-on learning. Students perform short-term projects for community agencies and learn about issues such as health, literacy, poverty, racism, hunger, homelessness and the environment.

Time is running out!

As semester draws to a close, it is not uncommon for students to find themselves in need of some volunteer hours for a class, organization, or scholarship. You know that IUPUI is nationally recognized for service and that the “end of education should surely be service to others,” but now you find yourself in a time crunch, looking for some volunteer hours. Is it too late to be civically engaged? The answer is a resounding "No!"

What can you do?

Don't miss this opportunity to get out of your comfort zone, be an active citizen, and make contact with your community in a new and exciting way. Here are some tips for how to take advantage of the situation, as well as some resources you will find helpful as you look for volunteer hours.

Volunteering late in the semester: 101

-Think outside the box! Use this chance to engage a nonprofit that fits your interests, passions, and personal goals. Then consider how establishing a relationship now with the organization you feel strongly about can lead to increased involvement in the future.

-Consider the service an opportunity to explore a nonprofit in hopes of spending more time there this summer, where you can gain more experience and responsibilities within the organization.

- If you are part of a student organization, propose an upcoming volunteer opportunity to the group. This will help your friends get their hours, and unify your group before you split for the summer.

-If you will be continuing your studies next semester, consider that the beginning of the semester is one of the hardest time to take on new ventures. Even if it seems late, get involved now and when school starts you will already have your priority of service in place!

-If you are graduating, you may be surprised to hear that volunteering is one of the best next steps you can take. Not only will you be benefiting society as you move on, but you will be establishing valuable connections in the community. The sooner you get involved the better!

-Remember: Service to others isn't for regular semesters only! The summer is a great time to volunteer and be an active citizen!

The Volunteer Verification Form: If you need hours for a scholarship, this is the form you will need to get signed and turned in before May 30th.

The Social Issue Sheets: If you would like to find your own opportunity and you know the social issue you are interested in, we categorized many local nonprofits so you can find one that shares your passion. ¡Viva la Causa! Join IUPUI students and members of the Indianapolis community to recognize César Chávez, a Mexican American farm worker, labor leader, and civil rights activist whose work has led to numerous improvements for union laborers. He is considered a hero for farm laborers and is hailed as one of the greatest American civil rights leaders.

In recognition of this holiday, the Community Service Scholars of the Sam H. Jones Community Service Scholarship Program are organizing the César Chávez Day of Service. Hosted by the Community Service Scholars, this year's event will consist of a festival celebration and service in the local community. Join us for music, community speakers, food, games, and more! Volunteers are needed to help run the festival booths and help with community improvement service projects.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service - January 18th, 2010

IUPUI's Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service is an annual campus tradition. This event, organized by a group of student leaders, honors one of the greatest freedom activists of all time, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Hundreds of IUPUI students, faculty, staff, and guests volunteer at community sites across Indianapolis as a way to honor Dr. King's commitment to service and to social justice.

Hunger and Homelessness: These are two plagues that touch every nation, including ours.

Defining our terms...

Homelessness: (noun) the state or condition of having no home (especially the state of living in the streets).

Hunger: 1.(noun) urgent need for food; The discomfort, weakness, or pain caused by a prolonged lack of food. 2. (noun) The condition where both the adults and children cannot access food consistently and have to reduce food intake, eat poor diets, and often go without any food.

Are you educated about these serous issues? Moreover, what practical steps are you taking to alleviate these problems; locally, nationally, and globally? You may ask, "How can one person make a difference?" or "What can I do to help?"

IUPUI United Way Day of Caring: "A Success!"

On Friday October 2nd, just under 400 Faculty, Staff, Students and Guests participated in the IUPUI United Way Day of Caring sponsored by the IUPUI Office of Community Relations and the IUPUI Office of Community Service.

In partnership with Keep Indianapolis Beautiful and the Indianapolis Downtown Incorporated, volunteers participated in a large clean-up picking up approximately 100 bags of recyclable material and 65 bags of trash. Volunteers also painted two recycling bins that will be placed out in the Indianapolis community for both general and glass only recycling, mulched around 190 trees out by I-65, and planted trees outside of the Circle Center Mall.

During the week of April 20th, IUPUI’s Office of Community Service (OCS) is celebrating “Volunteer Recognition Week.”

This academic year, over 1,532 volunteers have provided over 13,070 hours of community service! According to the value of your service, you provided about $264,702.94 worth of important work!

If YOU have been a part of any service activities on or off campus this school year, stop by the OCS (CE 375) THIS WEEK to pick up a FREE GIFT! Come see us anytime between 8am-5pm; we're located in Campus and Community Life in the Campus Center CE 370. Here’s a snapshot of the amazing things IUPUI Volunteers have accomplished in 2008-2009:
181 IUPUI volunteers participated in community service through their learning communities.
1037 IUPUI volunteers participated in at least one large scale service event such as the IUPUI Day of Caring, The Martin Luther King Jr Day of Service, Senator Bayh Leadership Summit, Service and the City, Global Youth Service Day, Color Your City, and the Cesar Chavez Day of Service.
50 IUPUI volunteers participated in our Alternative Breaks experiences to places such as Cincinnati, OH; Atlanta, GA; Soddy-Daisy, TN; Kansas City, MO; and Eustis, FL, and served in causes related to children, poverty, the environment, hunger, homelessness, and disability awareness.
159 IUPUI volunteers participated in Jaguars in the Streets, volunteering their time with local agencies dedicated to Indiana’s senior citizens, environment, youth, poverty, and other important issues.

La Plaza is a groundbreaking effort to be the trusted liaison between Latinos and the larger community. But did you know that the amount of services they have provided to Latino families have increased by 300% in the last year?

"Who is Cesar Chavez, and why is he inspiring all these people to volunteer?" Well, come find out during the Cesar Chavez Day of Service!

You don’t need to conduct a 36-day fast to follow in the footsteps of “one of the greatest American civil rights leaders.” Instead, you could just join us for a FREE educational breakfast, which will kick off our Day of Service as we further his cause.

For this event, IUPUI students and members of the Indianapolis community will participate in educational events and service projects to raise awareness about Cesar Chavez and his life mission. Come learn why history ranks this migrant farm worker’s impact alongside those of Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr!

This is a great opportunity! The selected “Scholars” will partake in a year of IUPUI’s nationally recognized service-learning as part of the Sam H. Jones Program, while receiving one of the school’s most noted scholarships (up to $3,500).

National Random Acts of Kindness Week held February 9-13!

This is a fun time on campus where we simply promote kindess!

Check out our tables in the Campus Center for goodies and inspiration!

If you'd like, there will be a sign up for the "Kindness Korps;" a new addition to the week. The special Korps members will have the chance to meet with the IUPUI Police and Local Fire Station #13 to present our "Thank you" posters, which all students can sign all week in the Campus Center! At the table be sure to pick up "Kindess Kards" that you can give to friends, family, or even strangers!

"MLK DAY a great success!"

Thanks to all who participated in this year's Martin Luther King Day of Service for making it one of IUPUI's best MLK Days ever!

Individuals, teams, students, and staff all joined hands in volunteering at many different service sites.

In total, more than 1,200 hours of community service were donated by the 400 volunteerrs to 23 local non-profits, including: The Ronald McDonald House, The Humane Society, and The Boys and Girls Club.

We have opened registration for the Dr Martin Luther King Jr., Day of Service!

This event always promises to be fun and meaningful.

Come pay tribute to King's legacy of tolerance, peace, and equality through an educational breakfast program and day of volunteering. All participants receive a FREE t-shirt and hot breakfast.
